Today food travel thousands of miles from the farm to the consumers. Why is this? Is it a positive or negative trend?

Thanks to the advancement of shipping and other technologies, more produce from farms is shipped to consumers in the global context so that they can have wider range of choice on food and other products as well as the economy of countries involved can get boosted.
The convenience to global customers is brought in mainly due to two major reasons, the efficiency improvement on transportation and technology of food preservation. After decades of construction, the high-speed traffic networks has been estabilished and improved means of transport including express trains, motorways and direct air routes are able to make their contribution to food shipping, which ensure farm produce to reach its destination fresh and bright. In regard to foods that decay quickly, shippers have employed new techniques in preserving taste and freshness by adding chemical supplements or introducing cold chain system which enables vegetables, fruits and seafood to travel across oceans and continents.
This trend could be considered beneficial to global consumers and economies within the range. City dwellers now can enjoy exotic and original dishes in their home towns, saving the costs of travelling abroad as the genuine ingredients from the source areas are available in local restaurants. Moreover, nations can develop their truly welcomed special produce without worrying its consumption because these agricultural products can be exported to other nations and thus considered a dynamic force for national economy, which, in consequence, guarantees the employment rates in farming, logistic and related industries.
Overall, although there may be some side effects of this trend like fierce competition in food markets as well as wastes and loss for those who lose their market shares, it certainly is favored by individuals, producers, shippers and governments.
