题目:
Some people say that the main aim of advertising is to improve the sales of products that people do not really need. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
范文:
Advertising has been communicating vital product information and persuading customers to purchase for centuries. With its development over time, this industry has developed many functions but some people now dare to state that the major aim of advertisements is to create demands for unnecessary commodities. This essay illustrates the irrational points in this view.
It is undeniable that the core nature of ads remains the same: to attract more customers and increase sales.
As the forms are expanding from billboards and newspaper to television and internet, it seems as if the functions of publicity are diversifying. Nowadays, this commercial behavior not only conveys features of a particular product or service, but creates a brand, a customer base, some demands and even a trend. However, all these roles and effects still lead to its final goal.
In addition, the idea proposed is totally based on an assumption: most products shown in adverts are not needed by consumers and thus products in real needs are separated from this service. Although some goods are exaggerated during the promotion process which have misled a minor part, most people will consider their necessities and values rationally and make their own decisions. In regard to production process, companies will have to investigate the need of wares in the market before design and manufacture, so barely any firm would invest resources in a project without profits. Therefore, the publication of useless items must be extremely rare on screen and their manufacturers would eventually be dropped out of the race.
In my opinion, I totally disagree with the idea about the main target of advertisements only for the unwanted because it neither realizes the underlying function of this trade nor acknowledge the ability of customers and producers.
