Some people say that advertising has positive economic effects. Others think it has negative social effects because it will make people feel dissatisfied with who they are and what they have. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Advertising industry has been significantly growing after the age of the global mass media had dawned. Some people are firmly convinced that this trend is beneficial to the global economy whilst others argue over its negative impacts on individuals.
Advertisements bring about economic profits by accelerating the flow in business. In the past, information of new products was normally known by a limited number of loyal consumers only. But now those information is conveyed to a wider range of customers immediately after their release thanks to adverts of all means. Without the promotion of adverts, new products would take years to get introduced and acknowledged to customers. Advertising generates increasing revenue for further upgrade and manufacture. Besides, advertising is a creative industry that creates many job opportunities and income. Therefore, the jobs in advertising are secured.
However, overwhelming advertisements affect common people psychologically on their attitudes towards buying behavior and themselves. The commercial adverts may exaggerate functions, set up favourable images of goods, explore unnecessary needs of potential customers. The promotion is usually so persuasive that people are likely to make the purchase, which has proved to be wasteful and eventually put many citizens in enormous debt. For instance, the hastened upgrading process of digital equipment in particular, has been forcing those convinced of consumerism and the superiority of a product, to follow every step in the evolution of goods. Last but not least, the advertising prompts individuals to measure themselves against others. The social comparisons can be harmful to people emotionally. If one sees a commercial for a fancy new car or mobile phone, it makes them think about their ordinary one, which might make them feel bad. Hence, the advertising might oppress those unable to afford, for they may doubt their own value when others are leading luxurious lives.
In my view, advertising is as effective as other methods of product promotions. However, more and more customers may choose things imposed by advertising and almost lose their own opinion. Overall, I think individuals should be cautious about the negative influences while obtaining useful information commercials bring.
