Part 3
Discussing problems with others
1. Why is it good to discuss problems with other people?
‘cause just as the saying goes, everyone you will ever meet knows something that you don’t. Discussing problems can help us see things from different perspectives, allow us to take as many factors into consideration as possible, and get inspired from others, so that we would be able to come up with better solutions.

2. Do you think that it’s better to talk to friends and not family about problems?
Well, that largely depends on what kind of problems we are talking about. I mean, if we have problems about things happened in our school, then maybe it’s best to discuss them with our friends, ‘cause they can better relate to us, and provide constructive suggestions. However, if our problems are more serious, or if they have something to do with our future, asking parents for advice might be a better idea, ‘cause they are more experienced, sophisticated and reliable, and they can help us to put our problems into perspective.
constructive suggestion: 建设性意见
have something to do with: 与…有关
3. Is it always a good idea to tell lots of people about a problem?
Um… maybe not. Although when you are trying to solve a problem, you might think two heads are better than one, sometimes listening to too much advice will make you confused. I mean, you will get stuck and don’t know what to do.
Communication skills at work
1. Which communication skills are most important when taking part in meetings with colleagues?
I think being a good listener is the most important when we are having a meeting with our coworkers, ‘cause that shows your respect for others. When they feel that you are respectful of them, they will treat you the same way. And that helps to create a harmonious atmosphere where everyone’s opinion can be listened to and valued.
2. What are the possible effects of poor written communication skills at work?
Well, if someone lacks written communication skills at work, especially when he’s new to the job, others might think he is impolite or rude just because he can’t write things in a proper way, and that will give a bad first impression, which definitely is not beneficial to his future career.
3. What do you think will be the future impact of technology on communication in the workplace?
I’m sure future technology will dramatically change the way we communicate when we work. First of all, telecommuting will be widely adopted, which means we can work from home, communicating with each other using something even more advanced than email or telephone. And also, no more business trips, ‘cause video conferencing will be the norm. And paperless office will become a reality when everything is digitalized.
