Well, there’s a restaurant in my hometown and it’s got about 200 years of history. All the pastries sold in the restaurant are traditional Chinese food, and that’s the traditional product I want to take about.
Different types of pastries are available here. There is this one called golden cloud, that’s invented in the Qing Dynasty, about 150 years ago. At that time, every city had to send gifts to the emperor on New Year’s Day, in order to please the emperor, our mayor hired the top pastry cook in that restaurant to come up with a new method to make cakes. After experimenting a long time, he finally got the recipe just right. The cakes he made was soft and fluffy as the cloud, I guess that’s where the name came from. It was not greasy or too sweet. And I heard it could melt in your mouth. The emperor raved about it, and all of a sudden, this restaurant became well known all over China.
Now, this kind of cake is still the best selling point in this restaurant. It used to be served as gifts for royals, but now everybody can afford it.
