(Saw)
The movie I’d like to talk about is called Saw, which I think is the best thriller series I’ve ever seen. Most of my classmates think that it’s too bloody and violent, but as I see it, this movie is thought provoking and really meaningful.
The story is about rebirth from physical torture, so you see, that’s a profound topic.
The leading character is a policeman who is diagnosed with cancer, and he believes in karma, and bad people should be seriously punished. So he decides to kill as many bad guys as possible before he dies. And this is how he does it. He’d love to play some kind of cruel games with them, until one of them or several of them are dead.
We gave him a nickname called data, because he knows everything, I mean, every detail about those bad people.
The most impressive episode is the one about two villains, a man and a woman, framing others and breaking apart families.
Data catches them, and comes up with a “so-called” interesting game, in which the rule was extremely brutal.
In this game, there would be only one survivor, and those two people have to cut off their flesh or even body parts, and put them on a scale in front of them to check which one is heavier. They only have one minute to do this, and the winter gets to live.
If you think about this story, you’ll realize it’s not just about killing and punishing people. What matters is what happens after that. In the movie, the woman wins, and the moment she is released, she deeply regrets what she has done before. So I think for her, it’s like a rebirth. She goes on living as a better person.
That’s why I like the movie.
(Accepted)
The movie I’d like to talk about is a comedy called Accepted. My favorite actor Justin Long stars in it playing a boy named Bartleby who’s got bad grades in school and couldn’t get into any university after graduation/he receives rejection letters from all of the colleges to which he applies, including those with high acceptance rates.
In order to save his face and gain approval from his strict father, he creates a non-existent university with the help of his friends. They renovate an abandoned mental hospital to make it look like a college campus. And he designs their uniform and logo as well. To make the “college” seem legitimate, Bartleby convinces his friend to set up a website for the school. Everything looked so real! The aim of all this is to trick his parents into believing that he has actually got accepted by a college. But their plan backfires when they realize the website they designed is functional, and all the applicants are accepted automatically. So they had no other choice but to continue this big lie. They end up enrolling hundreds of other rejected students, who are considered as losers, weirdoes and couldn’t fit in anywhere else.
The study atmosphere in that school is pretty awesome. He has the students create their own curricula. Students write down what they want to learn on a giant whiteboard, ranging from the culinary arts, sculpting, meditations, to unusual courses such as psychokinesis.
But soon after, people find out this whole thing is completely fake and the university is forced to close. But in court, Bartleby makes an impassioned speech about the failures of conventional education and the importance of following one’s own passions, convincing the board to grant his school a one-year probationary accreditation to test his new system.
And of course, just like all the other comedies, it ends with a happy ending.
Anyway, it was a really hilarious movie.
(Homeless to Harvard)
I’d like to talk about a movie called Homeless to Harvard, which I watched a while ago. It’s about an inspiring story of a girl who struggles to live a better life.
She was born in a horrible family, her mother is a drug addict with serious mental disorders, and her father is nowhere to be found. She grows up in a foster family, in which the brother always bullies her and gives her a hard time. And at the age of 15, her mom dies, and she escapes from the foster family and becomes homeless. She wanders around with her friends, with nothing to do every day until a tragedy that happens to her friend changes everything. Her friend is killed by a drug dealer, and that’s when it hits her, it is like a wake-up call. She starts to try and figure out what she is gonna do with her life, and she knows that she needs to make a change to her life, and she is clear that the only way to do that is to study, and the only place she could do that is in school. So she goes to a principal of a high school, and convinces him that she would do whatever it takes to get into a renowned university. And I’ll spare all the details here, let’s just say, she spends every waking moment studying, on the bus, on the subway or even while she is doing her part-time job. And just like all the other inspiring movies, she finally gets admitted/accepted into Harvard.
I like this movie because it’s based on a true story, and it’s meaningful as well as educational. If a girl like her can achieve something that great, then so can we.
That’s why I love the movie.
