I'd like to talk about a song called Barcelona, named after the capital of Catalonia in Spain. I haven't heard this song until very recently when I was watching a documentary of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, I was blown away by this song completely. I have to say Freddie made a piece of art here, together with Montserrat Caballe.
So speaking of the song, there's a beautiful behind-the-scenes story. It went on like the big rock star, Freddie Mercury had been a die hard fan of the soprano singer Caballe since he first heard her voice in live opera performances in the early 1980s. They didn't meet until 1986, and according to his personal assistant, meeting Caballe was the most nervous moment Freddie had ever had. He thought she would be aloof and distant, but things turned out to be the opposite, she was as down-to-earth as him offstage. They just clicked and Caballe requested him to write a song about her hometown, so I guess this is pretty much how this song came out.
I would say the song is absolutely groundbreaking and it soon became a hit after its release. It not simply amazed the maniac fans of Freddie, but also the music critics and the press. But I think it's lesser-known today. When we mention Freddie or Queen, we spontaneously think of the genre of rock or their stunning performance at Live Aid. If I hadn't watched the documentary, I wouldn't have known his adventurous trial of this operatic duet.
Overall, Barcelona struck me so much that I would recommend it to everyone. It's an audacious collaboration, a legacy of Freddie, as well as the embodiment of his spirit of pushing boundaries.
