The level of noise around us is constantly increasing, and is affecting the quality of our lives. What cause the noise? What should be done about it?
In recent years, it has been more commonly recognized that noise is increasing sharply and becoming a daily disturbance. This can be attributed to the higher density of population in urban surroundings and the concomitant human activities. In order to solve the annoying problem, governments can turn to the power of legislation and regulation, as well as promoting proper individual acts.
As the root of the annoyance, urbanization has urged people to flock into cities, producing more goods and personal needs. With the expansion of cities, the number of vehicles surges, bringing about beeping, engine roaring and occasionally brake grinding. Besides, area like fairs, shopping complex and even factories are built where noises are inevitable from audio advertising and from manufacturing. To worsen the situation, night life in metropolises is required by stressed people and encouraged due to its economic effects, so the long opening hours, typically until late night, are continuously harassing nearby residents and jeopardizing their health.
Authorities are obliged and they are the only party able to attend to this pressing issue in several ways. A set of laws, rules and adaptations would be set up to limit cars and business. The traffic in certain regions and hours should be limited. For instance, large and special vehicles are excluded in residential areas after working hours; tooting and sirens in downtown areas are not allowed despite emergency; sound barriers and green belts between road and neighborhoods can be put up. In regard to business districts, it is administrative regulations that enables officers and inhabitants nearby to supervise and report the illegal actions like excessive volume and working hours.
In one word, it is impossible to live in a complete quiet environment in today’s cities, but it is crucial that disturbing noises should be restricted for the sake of citizens’ well-being.
