1.As well as making money, businesses should also have social responsibilities. Do you agree or disagree? (20150725)
Sample answer:
The last years witnessed the boom of enterprises. Apart from the target of making profits, businesses are obliged to be responsible for some social issues. This will exert beneficial influence on both our society and the enterprise itself, although the high cost on social issues may affect its normal operation.
It is widely acknowledged that the support from enterprises is conducive to narrowing income gaps. Most companies have gained fiscal benefits from various entrepreneurial activities. However, at a disadvantage in terms of educational opportunities and career development, a large number of families still cannot afford educational expenses. If corporations can provide financial assistance for the students from disadvantaged backgrounds, chances are high that these students will have a competitive advantage in the job market and obtain a decent job in the future.
In addition, when companies make contributions to solving social problems, there is a possibility that they can bring more profits to themselves in return because of a good reputation it generates. For example, if they decide to make joint efforts with other enterprises to help the public raise the awareness of environmental protection, the corporate image is likely to be enhanced. As a result, these businesses will be able to gain more profits in trade activities.
Admittedly, if an enterprise spends too much money tackling social problems such as improving employees’ social welfare and medical service, its operation and development may be influenced negatively. More seriously, some companies will probably have to face the fact of bankruptcy.
To conclude, businesses have the obligation to shoulder social responsibilities, which can not only contribute to social stability, but also facilitate their own profits, although it may be difficult for them to balance social and entrepreneurial benefits from time to time.
2.It is suggested that all young adults should undertake a period of unpaid work helping people in the community. Does it bring more benefits or drawbacks to the community and the young people? (20150704)
Sample answer:
It is a common practice that young students in numerous countries are required to embark on a period of voluntary community service work. However, people’s views diverge greatly on this practice. Personally, I contend that those who are in the formative years should be motivated to undertake community work, although its potential downsides should be considered, too.
Seen from the positive aspects, some merits can be gained via encouraging young students to be involved in unpaid community service. The most glaring virtue is that those who assume the responsibility of community work could learn how to care about others and provide concrete assistance. Moreover, it could also enhance their sense of social responsibility and cultivate their loving hearts. And one’s coordination ability, teamwork spirit and management ability could also be promoted in the process of serving the community. Lastly, as for many city-born young people, it is the experience of community service that makes them become independent, sociable and cooperative.
Nonetheless, under no circumstances can we ignore the potential drawbacks triggered by introducing unpaid community service into secondary school curriculums. Firstly, the unpaid community service will surely occupy the finite and precious time of the students, which can otherwise be allocated in learning or building their bodies. Further, a great many students might be too young or inexperienced to cope with the complicated community service. In this sense, their voluntary activity would act as a burden to the community.
In closing, my stand is that although community service is a challenging task which might take up some time, the merits of encouraging students to do the community service outshine the demerits. It is this voluntary community work that helps us cultivate more responsible, well-behaved and caring social citizens.
3.Many customs and traditional ways of behaviour are no longer relevant to the modern life and not worth keeping. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (20160910)
Sample answer:
Human beings are evolving and developing generation by generation, which vary in way of life, thinking and behaviour because of different environment and conditions. Traditionally correct ways may no longer be approved nor applicable in modern times. Young generations are expected to keep abreast of the times and live a life in a way suitable for new situation.
Born in an era of Internet, young generations differ a great deal from their elderly counterparts in that they keep tuned in to current affairs by surfing the Internet while old generations read newspapers to know what happens in the world, and in that they make friends, go shopping and work online, whereas old generations meet friends face to face over a chessboard or a cup of tea, and post a letter to keep in touch with friends and family members.
The general populace lives in an innovation-driven era and are expected of creativity. They have to innovate in life, career, thinking and behaviour in order to succeed and win in the increasingly competitive and globalized world. They need to expose themselves to different cultures, views and contexts by travelling around the world, which equips them with broad mind and vision to follow the trend of globalization. Unlike old generations who think negatively of job-hopping, young people change jobs for reasons of corporate culture fit, career development prospects or just for personal interests. They need flexibility and resilience in an environment where change is the only thing that does not change.
It is therefore concluded that young generations should have new ways of thinking, life and behaviour which keep in line with the evolving world. However, it definitely does not mean that traditional ways will be abandoned; instead, we people should maintain fine traditions and integrate them into new and modern life in order to better prepare for the future.
