1.Some people think young people should be required to have full time education until they are at least 18 years old. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (20140308)
Sample answer:
In my country, China, children are allowed to leave school by the age of 15. But in some countries the compulsory school year is increased by 3. I personally think such policy is sensible in the modern society.
The major reason for my approval is that in today’s world, non-skilled young labor are finding it more and more difficult to be employed due to the advancement of modern technology. On the other hand, well-educated skilled workers are in higher demand. This social change makes it necessary to adjust the education system and equip the young generation with knowledge and skills. In addition, prolonging education is also an effective measure to lower the rate of juvenile delinquency because the idle adolescents out of school are prone to be involved in illegal activities.
However, there are some opposite voices against the policy of free secondary education. The arguments include that not all young adults are academically capable or interested and coercing them to attend full time school can cause problems like classroom disruption and absenteeism. Then how to manage such mess becomes another obstacle to implementing such a policy. Fining or punishing does not make sense as it does not solve the problem of indifference or disability to academic studies from the root. While these concerns sound reasonable, they cannot be the obstacles to change. Some measures can be taken to deal with the challenges, for instance, diverse forms of education, including apprenticeship or work based training to supplement formal one.
To sum up my opinion, increasing free education is an active approach to social change in employment as it can generate more skilled workers and lower youth crime as well. Given diverse options in education forms, even students with poor academic performances can be able to stay in education before reaching full maturity.
2.It is the responsibility of schools to teach children good behaviour in addition to provide formal education. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (20160618)
Sample answer:
The priority of school education is to impart children with knowledge and practical information for them to both learn and excel, but, in my opinion, it is more important for them to institute a formation of lawful behaviour.
Truly, a person's behaviour reflects his or her characteristics and moral standards, which is trained at a very young age. Parents and school share the responsibility to shape such understanding, in which, the former acts more important role than the latter. To be more specific, a school is in charge of a student's interpersonal communicative skills, presentation skills and so forth, allowing them to express themselves in public with good manners, as well as common social rules and policies that may influence their decisions, in addition to teaching them basic academic knowledge. Thus, the function of schools should be far beyond providing basic information, while giving positive influence as far as probable.
In truth, many may consider this extra responsibility puts schools in an awkward position where they have to invest tons of resources to deal with students' behaviour. However, as far as I am concerned, when a school establishes firm rules to keep an eye on students' behaviour and improve teachers actions to subliminally influence students' . The best way to teach is to set up an environmental for them to adapt, where teachers behave professionally and strictly.
Ideally, schools should neither intentionally design classes to teach good behaviour, nor spend their resources to control them, but to provide a professional learning atmosphere from top to bottom to influence students positively.
