1.In many countries, children are becoming overweight and unhealthy. Some people think that it is the government's responsibility. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (20220122)
Sample answer
Obesity has become a worldwide thorny issue, especially for developed countries where stock raising is highly prosperous so that their citizens are generally well-fed. The problem now is extending to children to such an extent as to undermine their health and some people believe the government is at fault.
The authorities should indeed carry the responsibility. As the rule maker of a society, government can actually take effective measures to reduce overweight of children, such as to set up standards of fitness and requirements of performance on physical education for high school and college admission, to regulate and control the prices of vegetables and fruits as these in some particular countries are not affordable for normal families on a daily basis, and to promote means of healthy nurture to parents. These assessments, manipulation and publicity provide overall ready conveniences for schools and families to take cooperative actions during the youth growth.
However, the duty to combat childhood obesity should not fall on the government. When fitness demanded, schools can organize exercises as a daily compulsory routine for each student instead of only forming up semiprofessional teams to tour the region and contend for honor. In regard to parenting, the family can give their offspring sustainable support of healthy food and, now that they are equipped with proper knowledge, can guide the youth into a balanced diet.
In conclusion, the opinion of government responsible for overweight and healthy issue is partially reasonable but the design and efforts by authorities only go in vain without the cooperation of everyday teaching and guidance.
2.It is difficult for people in cities to get enough physical exercise. What are the causes and what solutions could be taken to solve the problem? (20220709)
Sample answer:
Although governmental budgets have been allocated to sporting acreage and infrastructures in urban communities in many countries, city dwellers still find it difficult to access to adequate amount of weekly physical exercise. The following passage explores what might hinder them from living up to the expectation.
The urban lifestyle plays a key role for this situation. Thanks to the advancement of automation, fewer people, urban residents in particular, are involved in physical labor while more in mental work, which means both employees and students have adopted a sedentary lifestyle, spending much time sitting down and not moving. This still daily existence consume less calories, causing problems like obesity and eventually develop diseases. To make the matter worse, even though people are now aware of the necessity of physical activity out of this routine, the pace of life in cities are so busy and haste that most people are unwilling to exert efforts actively during the leisure time.
If this problem is about to be dealt with, organized activities may mobilize city inhabitants into sports. Schools and companies can organize events like Sports Meeting and Exercise Day and encourage attendance by all means. Once the activities, either compulsory or voluntary, have been arranged on a regular basis, participants may find them refreshing and stimulating, so interests can be aroused and holiday routine established. Besides, the social nature of some sports can also be utilized to invite people’s attention. Communities and other businesses, for example, can set up group games like Frisbee, City Marathon, Trial Gym Class where the young can meet new friends and get fit.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that people’s time and energy are mostly consumed due to the stressed and inactive way of life, so external stimuli should be arrangement for the sake of the well-being of citizens.
3.Too much money is spent in maintaining and repairing old buildings. Some people think that they should be knocked down and give way to the modern buildings. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (20171202)
Sample answer:
Some people think that old, historic buildings are no longer needed for the modernized city and they should be destroyed and make space for multi-storied ones. However, in order to remember our past, these old buildings, as far as I am concerned, must be preserved.
Firstly, by preservation of historic architectures, we pass on our history and legacy to our future generations. It is a way for the offspring to know and respect the tradition so that they are imparted with knowledge of the past when their ancestors dedicate their time and life to innovate technologies, to make crucial decisions for humanity, and even to fight for freedom. These buildings are symbols of their life as well as effort, and by maintaining them, younger generations are more cherishing the prosperous time they are given now. Spontaneously, cities like Lijiang in my country with perfectly preserved ancient remains have now become well-received tourist attractions around the world, bringing economic prosperity and cultural exchange.
Secondly, diversity of architectures in cities builds up a better sense of happiness of its dwellers. In fact, metropolitan people are living under tremendous pressure derived from heavy workload, daily expenditure and complicated relationship, which drive people into abyss of life desperation. With the existence of different constructs distributed separately in every corner of the city, the attention of citizens is distracted from the constant pressure they suffer. A minute of stop in front of a temple or altar, allowing them to appreciate the traditional customs, provides with a sense of fulfilment and happiness that modern technologies can never suffice.
Yes, preservation of old buildings is expensive, some even more than building new ones, but it is more important to consider the long term value brought to our future generation than the cost at hand.
