1. Some people regard the increasing business and cultural contacts between countries as appositive development. Others, however, feel these lead to the loss of national identities. Discuss both views and give your opinion. (20150829)
Sample answer:
Apparently,no country can avoid being swayed by the trend of globalization, under its subtle influence, the multiplication in business transaction and cultural communication amongst diverse nations seems to be inevitable. Personally, I hold positive attitude towards increased cooperation in terms of global economic matters and cultural exchange, however, we also should be alert to the potential risk of this tendency.
Seen from the positive aspects, an increasingly integrated global economy indicates more reciprocal trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of beneficial foreign labor markets. Thanks to the constructive strategic partnership among different nations, different nation’s immense economic value could be generated via the mutual complement of manifold resources. Also, the promotion of cultural communication is an effective way to smooth away the prejudice and misunderstanding and thus create a harmonious international relationship, the prosperity of international tourism is a good case in point.
Notwithstanding all that, some problems inevitably ensue. First, globalization might be detrimental to the maintenance of national identities. More precisely,a cultural attachment of one nation for another may trigger the decline of traditional culture, national pride and patriotism. To illustrate, frequent contact with foreign languages will reduce the uniqueness and trait of some lesser-known languages and make the world culture less rich and gorgeous than before. Further, when some rich countries invest large sums of money in developing industries in poverty-stricken countries, it might make impoverished nations become over-dependent on the donors. Meanwhile, international aid might bright about underlying political interference and economic exploitation.
In brief, the same knife cuts bread and fingers. My stand is that cooperation amongst different countries both in culture and business will enable involved countries to be mutually beneficial and realize win-win situation in the long term.
2. Difference between countries is becoming less evident recently. People can see the same films, brands, fashion, advertisements, and TV channels. To what extent do advantages outweigh disadvantages? (20160109A)
Sample answer:
As a result of the accelerating process of globalization in various aspects, young people in different countries are more likely to enjoy the same music, films, or television programs, which invariably give rise to some similarities.
Some people may claim that it is more a curse than a blessing for the world. One argument commonly raised is that this process will be damaging to the global diversity. When locals are bombarded with foreign products or cultures, they may gradually abandon their traditional values or ways of life, so this would have a negative impact on their national or cultural identities in the long run. They even quote numerous examples such as the Eskimo in Iceland and Mosuo ethnic group in Southwest China to illustrate their point of view.
While this is particularly true of some minority cultures, I want to point out that they are still special cases instead of the general rule. Generally speaking, sharing something across the globe can contribute to a deeper mutual understanding between different nations. For instance, a piece of country music by John Denver may well shed light on the peaceful daily life of Americans while a pop song by Cui Jian may introduce to Westerners a much more familiar China. What is more, an experience of some alien cultures may encourage more appreciation of the local ones, rather than assimilation or malfunction. There is overwhelming evidence on this when we consider Japan, or China, or even the US, which tend to incorporate the international elements into the local.
To conclude, I am quite optimistic about the prospect of an increasingly similar world. Of course, some minority groups may be put at a disadvantage for they cannot receive equal attention as the superpowers. So I also advocate that governments or other bodies should make efforts to bring these minorities into the international horizon.
