Well, I would say there are several types of jobs which come with decent pay. The first sort of high paying career normally involves extensive knowledge or special expertise, like surgeons, programmers as well as pilots. The second high-earning type of job all relates to business and management, like chief financial officers, bank managers or marketing directors. They make more money at the price of taking risks of making critical decisions for certain organizations and they are directly responsible for the business revenue. On top of that, lawyers also earn big wages because they are of great value in the eyes of their clients.

I think the biggest change is the rise of technology being used in all aspects of work. This has enabled people to become digital nomads who can either work at home or anywhere they are willing to, say, a coffee shop or a public library. With the help of portable devices, people no longer need to commute all the way to a fixed office. Another transition in terms of working conditions I suppose is the way of communicating. People nowadays are already used to collaborating with their co-workers via enterprise communication online platforms. Needless to say, this has enhanced working efficiency to a large extent, but staff have to be multi-tasking all the time, which somehow impair the efficiency at the end of the day.

What are the impacts of the epidemic on the work environment?

I would say the impact is enormous. Firstly, working remotely from home has become a new normal as open-plan offices may put employees' health at risk. This trend is still ongoing as the pandemic keeps occurring. Secondly, virtual teams are growing in number with the help of online communicating applications. This first appeared as a by-product for telecommuting, but it's here to stay even post- pandemic, as people find this way of holding meetings more efficient. Apart from these, a much higher hygiene standard has been set up ever since the outbreak. Lastly, workplaces are required to have an independent isolation chamber for emergencies and a stricter entrance control has been implemented.

In my view, it’s reasonable some companies give older employees higher salary. Take Japan as an example, they have adopted a seniority-based wage system, which underpays young workers, but rewards them well in later years to keep them from changing jobs. On top of that, the working experience older staff have can win themselves more income. But the problem with this scheme is also obvious, young staff is more likely to lose motivation if the financial distribution is based only on age. That is why more and more companies take account of the individual contribution of employees and based their salary on overall performance rather than age.
