Well, I’ve never won any form of competition, so I don’t have much to brag about, but there’s one thing for which I felt truly proud of myself, so I’m gonna share it with you, the story of how I overcame my stage fright.
I used to be super nervous when I had to perform or give a speech in front of a large audience. So I’ve never taken part in drama shows or speech contests, which for me are just mission impossible. Actually, I’m not shy, I can make jokes or chat with a bunch of friends just fine, but when it comes to formal occasions, like talent competitions or any form of public speaking, my mind would just go blank, and the palm of my hands would begin to sweat, and the worst part, my voice wouldn’t stop shaking despite all my efforts to control it. My mom was really concerned, she said, whether I like it or not, I had to give presentations at some point in my life, you know, at class or at work. And I just had to find a way to overcome my stage fright.
My mom signed me up for a course aiming at helping people like me to summon up the courage to speak in public. I still remember the first class vividly. Our teacher took us to a theater, and she told us to stand in line on the stage, shouting to the empty seats one by one. I was too embarrassed to do it, but after watching everybody follow the teacher’s instructions, I felt that was actually not a very silly idea. And I had to say, it worked like magic. After a few sessions, I gradually got rid of my fear. It was not easy, but I’ve come a long way.
I’m grateful for my teacher’s magical teaching method, and thanks to her, now I can even be the MC of our Christmas party.
So for me, that was a big achievement.
