I’d like to talk about the Single’s Day, AKA, Bachelors’ Day in China, which is obviously a day for people who are single. It’s celebrated on November 11, because the date consists of 4 1s. And the image of 1 looks like a stick which represents bachelors in the Chinese tradition.
On this day, people who are single would throw parties and meet new friends to try their fortunes. Initially, this festival was only celebrated by young men, but it’s now widely celebrated by both genders. Unattached men and women would attend blind dates in the hope of saying goodbye to their single lives.
And this festival is now completely commercialized. It has become a great opportunity for companies to target young customers. For example, some restaurants, karaoke clubs and night bars would organize special events and programs to attract young people. So on this day, all those entertainment places are packed with single people who are in the party spirit and ready to mingle.
And it has become the largest online shopping day in the world. On that day, online shop owners would offer huge discounts, and special gifts for shoppers. So there are people who like to put the items they want in the wish-to-buy list several weeks before the festival, and wait till the day to actually pay for them, that way they can save lots of money.
It’s not a traditional festival in China, but I think it’s really special.
